About Central government debt, total (% of GDP)

Central government debt as a share of GDP is the stock of loans, bonds and other debt owed by the central government, divided by GDP. The stock is usually measured on the last day of the fiscal year. The World Bank figure covers the central government only, so it differs from general government debt, which also includes local governments. Some countries do not report it for every year.
